Analysis Information
Bayer Leverkusen must win to keep their fading Bundesliga title hopes alive when they travel to the Holstein-Stadion to face Holstein Kiel on Saturday. Leverkusen are in second place with 47 points, a full 8 points behind league leaders Bayern Munich, while Holstein Kiel are at the bottom of the table with just 13 points. Although there is supposed to be a class difference between these two, one should tread carefully here; Holstein Kiel have occasionally shown why they are in the Bundesliga and they held Leverkusen to a 2-2 draw as recently as last autumn.
Holstein Kiel – a constant struggle for survival
Holstein Kiel have had a tough season and have struggled defensively. They lost 3-1 to Eintracht Frankfurt in the last round of the league and have now gone five games without a win. The team has also been weak at the back and have conceded two or more goals in 12 of their last 13 games. In total, they have conceded 14 goals in their last five games, which underlines how vulnerable they have been defensively.
Still, they can take something positive from their home form. Holstein Kiel have won two of their last four home games, scoring 12 goals while conceding eight. They also managed to draw 2-2 with Leverkusen earlier this season, having trailed 2-0 early in the game. Holstein Kiel are just one point behind Heidenheim in 16th place, which gives them a chance to qualify and avoid relegation, which gives them extra motivation in this match. Every point counts.
For Holstein Kiel, much of the responsibility will lie with their midfield and defense, especially with several key players out with injuries. Timo Becker and Marco Komenda will have to step up defensively, while Harres and Machino will likely be responsible for causing trouble for the Leverkusen defense.
Bayer Leverkusen – a guarantor of entertainment value
Leverkusen are coming off a frustrating 0-0 draw against Bayern Munich, where they completely dominated the game. Xabi Alonso's men created five big chances, hit the woodwork twice and only allowed Bayern to shoot twice throughout the entire match. This was their second consecutive goalless draw, but before that they had scored six times in two matches. The opposition in these matches has been solid, and they have dominated and been more unlucky than inept. The fact that it has ended goalless is therefore taken with a pinch of salt. They have found the net in 17 of their last 19 matches, so there is reason to expect them to come back strongly offensively.
Despite Leverkusen's good season, they have stumbled a bit on the road recently. They are winless in their last three away games (two draws and one loss), but before that they won four in a row with three clean sheets. With a Bayern team that can drop points against Eintracht Frankfurt, this is a game Leverkusen cannot afford to lose ground in.
For Leverkusen, Wirtz is an obvious key player, with his creativity and ability to create chances. Tella and Boniface will also be important in attack, while Xhaka and Palacios will have to control the game. Defensively, Tah, Tapsoba and Hincapie will likely form a solid back three.
The Leverkusen rocket can be fired early
Holstein Kiel have been weak at the back this season, while Leverkusen create a lot of chances even when they are not winning. This provides the basis for more goals in the match. Of the key statistics, we take the following into account for assessing the most valuable game:
- Bayer Leverkusen has the most corners in the 1st half of all Bundesliga teams this season. There is a slight difference in the number of corners VS odds on the games I find, the odds are simply too low or too high. But considering a Leverkusen team that will go out explosively, you can consider over 2.5 corners to Leverkusen in the 1st half at 1.40 or over 3.5 corners to Leverkusen in the 1st half at 1.89. Leverkusen's average is 2.80 away and 3.92 at home in the 1st half. And against Holstein in the previous match there were a total of 12 corners to Leverkusen. I like the value of over 3.5 corners here, in what I think will be a pressured home team, and want it as an alternative bet on my own coupon. On corner bets in total in the match we get over 9.5 corners at 1.72.
- Holstein Kiel, for better or worse, is at the top of the statistics where matches go over 3.5 goals. Here we get solid odds of 2.07. And the previous match ended 2-2. This will undoubtedly be a good alternative to high odds.
- Holstein Kiel also follows up by having the most shots against. We have several exciting bets on shots. We get odds of 1.84 on over 6.5 shots on goal for Leverkusen. In the return match it ended with 7 shots on goal for Leverkusen. In the last 3 Holstein has allowed 9, 5 and 12 shots on goal. Another exciting option is over 16.5 shots in total for Leverkusen, at odds of 1.60. In the last 3 Leverkusen has 15, 15 and 9 shots in total. In the last 3 Holstein has received 20, 20 and 29 shots against. In the return match it stopped at 23.
- Then we have the rocket Leverkusen, who are the team that scores first most often, but here we have to go down to 1.29 in odds and there is not much to gain from it.
- You can also consider a handicap bet on Leverkusen here. Leverkusen -1.5 is available at 1.71, and it is certainly not impossible with the wide squad that they can beat Holstein Kiel by more than 2 goals here.
- Finally, of course, you have to consider classic goal bets such as both teams to score and over 2.5 goals. Individually these come in at 1.85 and 1.43 respectively, and combined at 2.08.
In other words, we have several valuable bets to consider. Leverkusen are big favorites in this match and have everything to play for in their pursuit of Bayern Munich. Holstein Kiel have shown that they can cause trouble offensively, but their defensive weaknesses will likely be exploited by a hungry Leverkusen team. I think Leverkusen will win here, but not without working hard for it. Holstein-Stadion can be small and intense. There could easily be goals both ways here, but it would be surprising if Leverkusen does not take all 3 points here. Of several good options, I choose the following as my main bets:
Germany at 15:30: Holstein Kiel – Bayer Leverkusen: Bayer Leverkusen with over 16.5 shots in total in the match (1.60)
Alternative game:
Germany at 15:30: Holstein Kiel – Bayer Leverkusen: Over 3.5 corners in the 1st half for Leverkusen (1.89)
