Analysis of the teams

The 32nd round of the Serie A is here, and we're moving a little further down the table. Genoa head to northern Italy, specifically Verona, for this weekend's match. The home team is coming off a three-match unbeaten run and will be looking to extend that good run to avoid falling deeper into the relegation zone. Both teams have a long way to go to reach the top half, and neither Hellas Verona nor Genoa can feel safe considering the teams below them.

Hellas Verona – Vulnerable at the back, desperate going forward

Hellas Verona have produced three solid performances in a row – one win and two draws – with two of those matches coming against teams higher up the table. This weekend's opponents, Genoa, are just two places ahead in 14th place.

Despite a table position that mirrors last year's, there is a lot that is wrong with the home team – especially defensively. They concede the most goals per game in the entire league on average, with 1.9 goals conceded. This of course eats into their points tally, especially when the team themselves score less than half as many goals per game. In total, they have conceded 59 goals, and with a goal difference of 30-59, they are -29 – only Monza has worse numbers.

To make matters worse, the team's top scorer, Casper Tengstedt, is likely to miss this weekend's match due to injury. The young Dane, on loan from Benfica, has scored 6 goals in 22 games and has been an important offensive piece for Verona.

Genoa – Tactical security in turbulent terrain

Genoa also come into the match in good form, with points in four of their last five Serie A matches. Two of these have ended in draws, and two in wins. The team has played entertaining and structured football, with Ruslan Malinovskyi being a key figure in attack. He has had good combinations with Juventus-owned Fabio Miretti, who scored two goals against Lecce after assists from Malinovskyi.

Hired Andrea Pinamonti has been consistently at the top and is the team's top scorer with 8 goals. It is also worth highlighting our own Morten Thorsby, who always delivers with intensity and sacrifice when he puts on the Genoa shirt.

Coach Patrick Vieira has really got this team in order. Under his leadership, Genoa have taken points in 14 of the 19 games he has been in charge of. They appear to be a hard-working and difficult team to break down.

Summary – ready to shoot in Verona?

The last four meetings between the teams have not ended in a draw. The last time they met, in September 2024, Hellas Verona won 0-2 away. In the match before that, Genoa drew the longest straw with 1-2. These matches are often open and unpredictable, but a lot has happened since the last one. It will be interesting to see how big a difference there actually is in the two table positions that separate them today.

For Hellas Verona, the main focus should be to close the gap at the back, but the question is whether they can do it against an offensively strong Genoa. We will get the answer on Sunday!
