Before the teams in the Mizuno League can take a Christmas break, several of them will be in action this weekend to fight for important points both at the top and bottom of the table. One of the most interesting matches of the weekend can be found in Førde, where the home team takes on OSI.

Forde

We have to go back to November 8th to find Førde's previous league match in the Mizuno League. Then the Westlanders delivered a solid performance and won 3–0 over TIF Viking at home. Since then, Førde has also been in action in the cup, where last weekend they secured a dramatic 3–2 victory against Koll in the semi-finals after an intense five-set match that was decided 18–16.

The weekend before, Førde made the trip to Oslo, where they impressed greatly. First, there was a strong 3–2 win against OSI, before they followed it up with a convincing 3–0 triumph against Koll. With these results, Førde has put themselves in a very favorable position, and with a win against OSI they can finish before Christmas at the top of the table.

OSI

OSI got off to a great start on their return to the Mizuno League, opening the season with a strong 3–0 win against Randaberg. After that promising start, however, things have gotten tougher for the Oslo students. In the five following league matches, OSI have suffered five straight losses, and the team has thus found itself in the middle of an early relegation drama.

Nevertheless, there were bright spots last weekend, when OSI took home a very important point in the 2–3 loss against Førde. The performance showed that the team can bite back against the top teams. However, a demanding trip to the west awaits, where OSI first meets Førde on Saturday, before they end the weekend against TIF Viking on Sunday. The point will be worth its weight in gold in the fight to climb away from the bottom before the Christmas break.

Match picture

Here I expect Førde to come out and take control of the game early. This time they also have captain Martin Olimstad with them, who was in charge of the match against OSI last time. With a full squad and strong form, there is reason to believe that Førde wants to end the year with a solid victory in front of their home crowd.

OSI, on the other hand, will probably have to go all-in from the start to have a real chance. They are dependent on surprising, serving hard and playing with high risk. At the same time, they must hope for a somewhat slow entry from Førde, both in the serve and sideout game.

When it comes to the battle picture, I see two possible scenarios in practice:

  1. Førde gets going from the start , takes command of the match and wins comfortably 3–0.
This is the most likely outcome if they establish serve pressure and stable sideout play early.
  2. OSI succeeds in the opening , keeps the pressure up and manages to make the match more even than the odds suggest.
In such a scenario, I imagine Førde still pulling it off, but with more resistance – for example 3–1.

Regardless of the scenario, Førde should be the clearly stronger team over time, and anything other than a home win would be a big surprise. I therefore end up with Førde winning 3–0.
