Analysis Information
Brann's European adventure continues at the Stadion when the Bergen team welcomes Rangers for their second home match in the Europa League. Brann's journey in Europe has gone a bit under the radar, as the main focus in Norwegian football has been on Bodø Glimt and their Champions League adventure.
It's boiling in Bergen, it's trembling at Store Stå, Bataljonen is ready for new European matches! On paper, these are two relatively even teams, and in the ELO ranking, Brann stands with 1543 points, while Rangers has 1520 – about the same as Tromsø.
Brann – Strong form at home
Brann have won five straight games in Bergen, three of which are in the Eliteserien and two in the Europa League. The Reds have been impressively solid on their home turf this season.
In the first away match against Lille, Brann delivered a strong performance, but were punished by individual performances that created space and quality Lille exploited. At home, Brann got their well-deserved revenge with an even and fully deserved 1-0 victory.
In total, Brann has created eight corners (four at home and four away). but at the same time conceded 14 (eleven away and three at home). At the stadium they are among the Eliteserien's very best teams, with shared first place together with Viking. The statistics say 9-2-1 with a goal difference of 26-15.
The absence of Magnùsson is a loss, and although there are rumors that he might make it to the game, it seems unlikely. In this weekend's win against Haugesund, both Bård Finne and Ulrik Mathisen were very good, albeit against a Haugesund team that many have been successful against this season.
Rangers – Fired coach and baptism of fire for new coach
Rangers have had a miserable start to the season and are on just 9 points – a full 13 points behind league leaders Hearts. The result so far is 1–6–1 and a goal difference of 8–9, an average of 2.13 goals per game. Their only win came against bottom team Livingston. Away from home they are 1–3–0 and a goal difference of 5–4, an average of 2.25 goals per game. In comparison, Rangers had 17 points at the same time last year.
The Europa League has not gone any better either – two losses and a goal difference of 1–3.
Manager Russell Martin was sacked before the international break, following poor results and a lack of development. The interim coach had no immediate effect against Dundee.
The club recently announced Danny Röhl as their new head coach. He will receive his baptism of fire away to Brann, after just three days with the team. It is therefore unlikely that he will be able to make his mark on Rangers so quickly – unless the players give a temporary psychological reaction and lift themselves to impress their new boss.
Rangers have previously shown good possession and control, but they have lacked defensive confidence and efficiency in front of goal. This has resulted in a number of draws and frustrated supporters. In the Europa League, they have had four corners at home and seven away.
Conclusion
This is an excellent opportunity for Brann to secure three new points in the Europa League.
The team has momentum, home field advantage and a boiling crowd behind them. Rangers, on the other hand, travel to Bergen with great pressure, failing form and a new coach under their belt.
Everything points to a close and physical match – but unlikely to be a goal celebration. An underplay may be worth considering.
Today's game will therefore be;
