Analysis Information
Schalke 04 host Hamburg at the Veltins Arena on Saturday night – a clash between two traditional clubs where you never quite know what you're going to get even though there's a lot of difference between the teams this season. Schalke are coming off a weak away game against Jahn Regensburg where they lost 2-0, while Hamburg are coming off an even weaker performance where they lost 4-2 at home to Eintracht Braunschweig. Hamburg really need a win here to cement their place at the top in a record-equal match in the upper half, while Schalke need 3 points just as much to be able to ride out an unstable season and put it behind them. A lot is in store for a real treat here!
Schalke 04 – A season marked by unstable performances across the board
Schalke have had a season where both performances and results have varied greatly. They have 10 wins, 7 draws and 12 losses – a typical mid-table team in every way, even in a very even league where the upside is big and the downside is just as big. With 48 goals scored and 52 conceded, it is clear that the team has challenges defensively, although offensively they have the ability to put pressure on any opponent in the 2. Bundesliga. They actually have an average of 2 goals at home this season, but also an average of 2.07 goals against. It is at home that Schalke assert themselves this season, and have proven (at times) harder to beat, where their home form shows 6-2-6 with a PPG of 1.43.
Schalke boasts several exciting statistics that are always examined before the weekend rounds. At home, 79% of the matches have ended with over 2.5 goals. The last 2 of 3 home matches have contributed to that statistic. Furthermore, they have two weapons who are both healthy up front: Sylla and Karaman, they have 14 and 13 goals respectively this season and are the most dangerous striker pair in the 2nd Bundesliga. But the midfield is unstable, and the defense is even more unstable. And at the back is the most uncertain moment this season: Heereken. Karius was a single big bright spot since he entered the doors in Gelsenkirchen, but was unfortunately injured against Greuther Fürth. Heereken had to come in and this guy makes many strange choices at the back. This results in one dangerous situation after another. The team has to go offensive against Hamburg and create uncertainty in an otherwise safe Hamburg team. They have to go out in the 100, something they were good at at the start of the season, now it remains to be seen where the motivation lies as the season ebbs into no man's land. Motivation could quickly become essential here, because there is no shortage of that in Hamburg these days.
There are no notable absences in the Schalke squad apart from Karius. They field a good selection of the best they have to offer this season, and are therefore ready for battle. Let's look at some key statistics before examining Hamburg's condition.
Key statistics:
- Conceded goals in last 5 out of 5 matches
- Notched better home form with PPG 1.43
- Average of 2 goals scored at home
- The Karaman – Sylla combo is the sharpest attacking duo in the 2. Bundesliga with 27 goals combined
Hamburger SV – The dream of promotion after several years of waiting is alive and well
Now the most important thing for Hamburg is to have a solid season. With 5 games left in the season, it will be important to pick up points from games where points are expected. Hamburg's remaining match schedule is absolutely manageable, and the gap to the dreaded qualification spot is 5 points. And the teams from 3rd to 8th/9th place change pretty much every week, so Hamburg knows that they can exploit the yo-yo system of the teams below. But then there is no point in losing 4-2 at home to Eintracht Braunschweig - a real banana peel that must be forgotten as quickly as a pig. The positive is that Hamburg now has two straight away games with 3-0 in both games, against solid opposition from Nuremberg and Magdeburg respectively. And they know that they are facing a Schalke here that can play like a top team at its best and like a relegation team at its worst - the problem for fans and opponents is that they never quite know which Schalke teams will show up.
Hamburg has been involved in goal-rich matches lately. In the last 4 out of 5 matches there have been over 2.5 goals, and strictly speaking the match against Elversberg should have done the same. Selke at the top has excelled all season and is at the top with his 19 goals this season. Besides that, they have Glatzel, Dompe and Königsdörffer, all of whom have had an excellent season. Hamburg has steeled their 4-3-3 formation and it has paid off: They are just behind Schalke with over 2.5 goals in 71% of their (away) matches. The away form is somewhat weaker than at home, a PPG of 1.71 and +7 in goal difference. This deviates a lot from the home form of PPG 1.87 with +20 in goal difference. But gut feeling suggests that here they are focusing strongly on the fact that they are coming from two away matches where they have had good control from start to finish.
Hamburg has a strong squad here. No notable absences and the disappointment after last weekend's loss is probably well-settled and will be avenged here.
Key statistics:
- Over 2.5 goals in 10 of 14 away games
- Kept a clean sheet in 2 away games in a row against respectable opposition in Magdeburg and Nuremberg
- Top the league 1 point ahead of FC Köln
- 2 losses in last 10 games
Conclusion: It smells like a goal here, both ways
Schalke are top with BTS in 11 of 14 matches this season at home. Hamburg are just behind with BTS in 9 of 14 away matches. The big exception, and a small uncertainty here, is that they have kept a clean sheet in their last 2 away matches. When these teams met in Hamburg in the autumn, we entered the match with approximately the same starting point: an unstable Schalke against a strong Hamburg at home. Everything was in place for an easy enough Hamburg victory, but here it ended 2-2 after a strong turnaround from Schalke. The match was simple in that sense: Hamburg dominated the 1st half to the point, but Schalke completely took over in the 2nd half and it was more than fair that it ended 2-2. The feeling is that we could soon see something similar this weekend, with all due respect to the fact that we never know what we will get from Schalke and further with a Hamburg that could soon have a bit high shoulders here – a lot is at stake with expectant fans behind them. Based on BTS standing high in both squads, and the average is high at over 2.5 goals, goal betting is the natural way to look here. Corners and cards can be considered, but it didn't take off in that sense in the previous match, 4 cards and 6 corners in total. Over 2.5 goals is available at 1.50, BTS is available at 1.47 – you can probably smell a long way where we're going: BTS + over 2.5 goals at 1.70. Alternative bets favor goalscorers and Hamburg here.
