Analysis Information
The weekend ends with what could easily be the real treat of the weekend, because we can't talk enough about Liga Portugal. Some would argue that the goal average is excessively low, but that is more than compensated for by the drama. And in top matches like this, it is precisely drama that we are supposed to make money on.
Because the Portuguese League is always won by Porto, or the capital teams Benfica or Sporting. Arrest me if I'm wrong, but since World War II, the Portuguese League has only been won once by a club other than the big three; it was in 2000/2001 when Boavista won.
So dominant are the teams that Benfica stands with 38 league titles, Porto with 30 and Sporting with 21. And this year looks to be no exception.
FC Porto – In pole position
The Dragões have been flawless this year. With a 7-0-0 record in the league and a 2-0-0 record in the Champions League, the Porto Dragons have kept their fiercest rivals from the capital at bay. And if you're from Porto, nothing tastes better.
And much of the credit for the good start to the season must go to Francesco Farioli. A man many of us first got to know when he took over Ajax, when they miraculously sank to the bottom of the Eredivisie. But he came in, tightened up the defense, and secured the best defensive statistics in Ajax history. Unfortunately, they squandered a gigantic lead, and were caught by PSV on the finish line, but Farioli had made a name for himself. So from Nice, via Ajax, it was time for Porto.
His football is easy to recognise, and this year's Porto team is also based on tight defensive organisation. A 19-1 goal difference is quite impressive, and for those who know Portuguese football it is easy to see that the Italian fits in like a glove. But that's not all; another man who gets a lot of praise is André Villas-Boas. The man we remember from Chelsea, Tottenham and Marseille, is now president of Porto.
When it comes to this year's squad, a lot is about last year's big comet; Samu. He has continued where he left off, and this year stands with five goals in six matches. And with national team goalkeeper Costa in goal and Bednarek in central defense, it is difficult to break through this year's Porto team. In addition, former Arsenal player; Jakub Kiwior has had a good start to his career in Portugal. Evergreen Luuk de Jong is injured and Martim Fernandes is suspended, but here FC Porto starts with almost a top crew.
Benfica – is the race over?
As mentioned, only three teams win the Liga Portugal. This means that you shouldn't waste points against teams other than these three. And here Benfica has sinned. Because with 1-1 against Rio Ave and Santa Clara, they have already wasted four very important points. Completely unnecessary.
In addition, things haven't been much better in the Champions League. It's one thing to lose at Stamford Bridge, but you shouldn't lose at home to Qarabag. So with the title race looming, and 0-0-2 in the Champions League, there was only one thing to do; hire "The Special One.".
The man who won the Champions League with Porto actually started his coaching career at Benfica. But clearly; his return has created excitement, and José Mourinho is not one to calm tempers. A highly flammable match just caught fire.
In addition, we should remember that we have two Norwegians who are doing well in Benfica. Schjeldrup has one goal and one assist, while Aursnes has been a fixture in a strong midfield along with Barrenechea, Dahl and Rios. But if a single player is to be highlighted, it is difficult to avoid Vangelis Pavlidis. He has brought his goal-scoring form with him from AZ Alkmaar and this year has five goals in seven games. Last year he stopped at 19 goals. So, like today's home team, Benfica is also overflowing with quality. So what are we playing then?
It's going to boil
Everything indicates that this is going to explode. For the following reasons;
- Table position . In a league that is always decided in head-to-head matches between Benfica, Sporting and Porto, teams cannot afford to give away points to other teams. Benfica has done that this year. And that is exactly why this match MUST be won. A loss here will send them 7 points behind, and there are too many points to catch up, as long as Porto does not stumble against Arouca, AVS and Tondela.
- José Mourinho . The man who thrives on drama could easily be the match that lights this fire. He has a history with both, but won the Champions League with Porto. He will fire up front, during and after, and he will make sure his players are fully prepared for the task ahead.
- Statistics . FC Porto and Benfica are not the teams that get the most cards in the league, but against each other things tend to catch fire. While the home team has an average of 2.57 cards this year, and the away team has incurred 2.71 cards, there has been an average of 9 cards in the last five matches between these teams.
- Miguel Nogueira . The young referee has given an average of 4.75 cards so far this year, and he has not refereed any of the top three teams this year. The intense atmosphere at the Estádio do Dragão could quickly see his average skyrocket.
So yes; we believe in cards. And when you get playable odds on a line that is almost always passed, both by the referee and the teams involved, then we have to jump on the following bet;
Portugal at 22:15: FC Porto – Benfica: Over 4.5 cards (1.68)
