Can Espanyol put an end to Barcelona's title celebration?

The Catalan derby between Espanyol and Barcelona at the RCDE Stadium is more than just a game for three points. For Barcelona, it's about securing the La Liga title, while Espanyol are fighting to avoid relegation. With so much at stake for both teams, it's set to be an intense and nerve-wracking clash.

Espanyol

Espanyol find themselves in a vulnerable position, just five points above the relegation zone with three games remaining. After three straight defeats, including a 3-2 defeat to Leganés, the pressure is on coach Manolo González and his team. González described the first half of the match against Leganés as the team's weakest in 2025, underlining the seriousness of their current situation.

Midfielder Pol Lozano was missing last game, and his return could give the team a boost. I think Lozano gives the team stability defensively and they are not quite the same without him, although you can't see this in the statistics. Espanyol have proven to be an effective team offensively with 38 goals. Defensively they have also overperformed, with 47 goals conceded out of an expected 53.5 goals, Joan García should get a lot of the credit here.

Barcelona

Barcelona are on the verge of securing their 28th league title after a dramatic 4-3 win over Real Madrid in El Clásico. With a seven-point lead and three games remaining, they can secure the title with a win against Espanyol.

Under the leadership of Hansi Flick, the team has found form, with five straight league wins. Offensively, Raphinha has been in great form, and he is expected to start alongside Lamine Yamal and Pedri, both of whom have played an important role in what could be the 28th league championship. Robert Lewandowski has been a reliable goalscorer, but it is uncertain whether he will start after recent injury problems. As a replacement, we will probably see Ferran "the shark" Torres, he has found the net regularly, against Real Madrid he did not score, but he got a hat-trick of assists. We will probably see some Lewandowski magic later in the game as he still has a chance to become the top scorer in the league, and is chasing a hundred official goals for the club.

Defensively, Inigo Martinez is missing due to a yellow card collection, and Jules Koundé due to a hamstring injury, but Pau Cubarsí and Eric García are available again after minor injuries. Eric García has been in form in the last period, he and Cubarsi are important defensively to collect the last three points Barcelona need.

Is this a battle decided by technical skills?

Barcelona have had the upper hand in recent meetings, winning 3-1 earlier this season. Espanyol have not won at home against Barcelona since 2007, underscoring the challenge they face.

This is not just a match between two teams at different ends of the table, it is a derby where mental strength and emotional control will play as much a role as technical quality. Espanyol are under pressure, not only sportingly, but also emotionally. The thought of potentially seeing their rivals celebrate the league title in their own stadium is a thought that can ignite an extra spark in the squad, but also lead to over-excitement and stupid mistakes. They have 11 yellow cards and one sending off in their last five home games, a clear sign of frustration in critical parts of the game.

Barcelona, on the other hand, will try to slow down the game and control both the tempo and the temperature. Hansi Flick knows that his team is the favorite in every way, but he will also be aware that Espanyol has little to lose and can make an unpredictable start. Therefore, it is likely that Barcelona will use the first half to control, and only engage a higher gear later in the game, when nerves in the home team show.

Therefore, it can also be interesting to see that most of the goals come after half-time, and that the match can be even for a long time, even though Barcelona controls most of the field. It is also worth noting that Espanyol has conceded 53% of its goals in the second half of matches.

Barcelona will likely dominate possession and press hard from the start, but even more so in the second half. Espanyol, who are fighting for survival, will need to be disciplined defensively and exploit counterattack opportunities. Considering Barcelona's offensive strength and Espanyol's need for points, it is likely that the match will be high scoring. We therefore recommend;
