Brighton - Manchester City 31-08-25

Analysis Information
Is there something in the water in Manchester these days? Something that makes the city's footballers dizzy and loose in their stomachs when it matters most? The city's red alibi has its own challenges, but the light blues also got a real nose-stealer last weekend. Our analysis backed Pep's men, but there we just had to hold our hands up and admit defeat. City disappointed greatly, and failed to score a single goal against a revitalized Tottenham team. A bit alarming after the hugely impressive series premiere. This again leads to one being a little unsure of where this star gallery is. Pep could in reality have fielded two teams that could both fight for the title in England, but could this also be part of the challenge? It may take some time before City has figured out what their best starting lineup is, and how they want the team to look in 2025/2026. Brighton has a Joao Pedro hole in their attack. The leading striker has now left for Chelsea, and once again we are left with a somewhat reduced Brighton squad. The goals came against Oxford in midweek, but it was a cup game, and Manchester City is Manchester City. The question is whether Brighton will not face a tough season.
Brighton – Without their best, and most important, player
In the match against Everton last time, a match that ended in a 0-2 loss, Welbeck played the whole match. The 34-year-old is a seasoned Premier League player, but to expect this man to be a leader throughout an entire season is utopia. Now he missed a penalty in the aforementioned match, and came up with a few finishes, but the ball was never in the net. Here Brighton must act before the window closes. An 18-year-old Greek is not enough. I would like to think that there is hard work behind the scenes.
Otherwise, Baleba is the big player in this team. The 21-year-old from Cameroon has delivered several great matches, and was/is on the radar of many bigger teams. Manchester United, among others, were long-term fans of the athletic midfielder. For now, it seems that Brighton will benefit from his services for a while longer. Absolutely crucial for this season not to be unbearably tough.
No matter how we twist and turn it, Brighton seems somewhat toothless as of today. Mitoma is not what he once was, and the options are few. We should not paint it so dark so early in the season, after all, they are coming off a 6-0 win over Oxford just days ago. That's just the difference in level when Manchester City now visits. Because there are few teams City have a higher win percentage against than Brighton. This psychological advantage, combined with a burning desire to avenge the Tottenham loss, could lead to a tough time for the home team on Sunday.
Manchester City – Does Pep simply have too many players to choose from?
He said something along these lines not too long ago. The squad is too big. Good footballers must always be left out when the match squad is to be drawn up, and friction and dissatisfaction can arise. We only saw it in the first round, almost the entire defense that stood for much of last year's season was absent, yet they mustered a bit of a defensive line. And up the pitch it is, if possible, even worse. Who apart from Rodri, Haaland and Reijnders gets the nod? Bobb, Cherki, Foden, Doku, Gundogan, Silva, Marmoush, Nico and Nunes. Choose three of these nine. It can almost be too much of a good thing.
Assuming that Pep, who is possibly the best in his field, manages to solve this cabal, then Manchester City has quite a team this season. If the relationships are eventually in place, if the balance is right, and if Rodri stays injury-free, then the competitors will really notice that the locomotive is rolling again. The goalscorers are many, and the technicians are beyond most. If everyone smiles every day, City has unparalleled depth.
What still needs to be addressed is the loss at home to Tottenham. Here it didn't work out, and even with an xG of 1.55 the ball didn't go in. They dominated the play, had the ball, but weren't poisonous enough. The bench became a bit impatient after a while, and Silva and Doku came on early in the second half. It seems like they are searching for the right constellations, and we assume that the training ground has been used extensively this week. If the lineup is sharpened a bit, we can get the so-called ketchup effect relatively quickly. Especially now that City is facing a desirable opponent, statistically speaking.
Conclusion – Is the level difference as great as the paper suggests?
We actually think it is suddenly. At the time of writing we get pure away marking at 1.90 in odds. So to speak, we won't get that when this season has settled in. An abnormally high odds on City for a Premier League match, at least taking the opponent into account.
The numbers say that Brighton rarely lose at home. However, they always concede. The clean sheet is kept very rarely, and it would surprise both me and many others like me if the light blue guests would go two Premier League matches without scoring. After analyzing this match over a couple of days, I think there is more and more evidence that City will strike back in the third round of the league.
We must not forget the fact that Brighton lacks offensive power either. One goal in the first two games has been enough. And to make matters worse for the home team, City practically never concedes when they are on the road around England. The numbers become even more impressive if we look at what the situation is at half-time when City is the away team in the league. In the ten away games Manchester City have played this year, they have conceded only one(!) goal before half-time. These are absolutely insane numbers. ONE single goal conceded in the first 45 minutes over ten away games. It is questionable whether we do not see the outlines of a betting recommendation here.
Overall, I think City, with all their stars, will fight back this Sunday. Brighton are short of goals, the away team is not conceding goals on the road, and Haaland and his mates will show that the game against Spurs was just a fluke. We are looking for bets in favor of the visitors.
