Brentford against Newcastle is usually a thrilling and entertaining affair. And I don't know about you, but that's what I, as a neutral, want when I sit down centrally on the sofa on a Sunday, ready for a match from the ball island. The home team has started the season on a consistent note, actually a bit like how we've become accustomed to watching Brentford. It fluctuates somewhat violently, and over the course of a month, not to mention during a match, we get to see the whole spectrum. Entertaining attacking football interspersed with crucial defensive mistakes. But there will be goals. Newcastle, for their part, are playing better in the Champions League than in the Premier League this season. On British turf, things go up and down, and the away games in particular seem difficult to handle. The black and whites come into this match with another European triumph on their conscience, but perhaps also with some tired legs? Anything is possible at Brentford Community Stadium this Sunday afternoon.

Brentford – Down to Earth Again

Because Sunday's home team had something going on. After a nice win against Manchester United, there was a loss for the light blues from the same city. No big deal. The three following games were then won, with a strong win against Liverpool as the biggest triumph. They were on the move, and climbed a few notches in the table. Last weekend, however, came the setback, when Crystal Palace became too strong. Palace is a very solid Premier League team, but still, these are the teams Brentford wants to challenge. It still seems to be somewhat fragile, and at times the miss of Mbeumo and Wissa also seems to be significant. Not so strange considering the position these two had in the club.

We talked about Schade, Thiago and Ouattara before the aforementioned match against Palace. The three front figures are skilled footballers, and we assumed that they could cause enough trouble for a solid defensive wall. It was only almost, and although Brentford had a lot of the ball, the big chances did not come. If you want to get something out of Selhurst Park, you have to take advantage of the chances you get, and Brentford's front trio did not manage to do that this time.

So what will be different when you host Newcastle now? First and foremost, you play on your own turf. That helps Brentford, who are better at home than away. Nothing remarkable about that, but if you look at the goals scored, there is a significant difference. Another point is that the home team has been training quietly on the field all week. Newcastle, for their part, have had a physical and mental discharge under floodlights in the Champions League. The number of kilometers run may prove relevant as Sunday's game progresses.

Brentford's challenge, if they want to make a point from this weekend's defeat, is to close the gap at the back. A goal difference of 14-16 shows that the pendulum can swing either way, and against a team of Newcastle's calibre, the concentration in the back row needs to be stepped up a notch. It remains to be seen whether they can maintain that focus for the full 90 minutes.

Newcastle – Thrives best on the big stage

Because that's really how it has looked so far this season. The team from the northern port city is very strong in Europe, and has three wins in the last three. A combined goal difference of 9-0 is eye-catching, and things simply go their own way. This week it was Athletic Bilbao who were sent home with nothing to show for it. The Basques were kept at a reasonable distance, and Newcastle is now among the top eight, and has put the loss to Barcelona behind them.

The challenge is that you probably really want to play in the Champions League next season too. Assuming Newcastle don't win this year's edition, you have to start picking up far more points in the domestic series if that dream is to become a reality. As of now, it's a long way up there, and a 13th place with a negative goal difference doesn't scare anyone. It's also striking to see how Newcastle appear in front of their own fans versus on the road. The last two home games in the Premier League have been won, while the last two away games have been lost, against Brighton and West Ham. In both games, they conceded quite a lot, and the scoreboard finally showed 1-2 and 1-3 respectively.

Ahead of the match against Brentford, Burn and Gordon are uncertain. Beyond this, only Livramento and newly acquired Wissa are unavailable. The squad should in principle be strong enough to handle two tournaments now, but theory and practice rarely connect. Tired legs of important players can be decisive, and perhaps especially at the top you should have had a fully-fledged alternative at this stage of the season. Of course, it was not the plan that Wissa should not be able to relieve Woltemade. Newcastle's midfield trio is one of the better ones you can find, but here too many steps have been taken over the last few weeks. The match load may be felt, and Howe may have to shake things up a bit this Sunday. Maybe it's time for both Murphy, Elanga and Hall from the start?

Conclusion – We expect a home team that storms out of the blocks

Because this is where Brentford's chances lie. A high tempo, with aggressive pressure. Don't let Newcastle rest, and try to make the game heavy and exhausting. We've seen it before that the match load can play a role, and especially when we reach 70 minutes played the gaps can become large. There could be better working conditions for Thiago and his teammates this weekend.

What about the history of this match? Yes, it tends to be a hot topic here. The last four include 2-1 and 3-1 to Newcastle, a 4-2 match in favor of Brentford, and just as well a 4-2 match where Newcastle drew the longest straw. An open affair, and a match where both teams get on the scoreboard. We like that, and that gives more interesting opportunities. Is there anything that indicates that this match will be different? Well, not really. Brentford are good at home, Newcastle are struggling away, the match load is uneven, and both teams have fast attacking cards who love space behind. And space behind we feel confident that we will get.

Brentford must seize the opportunity this Sunday. We lean in that direction in terms of marking, but we don't dare write off the guests completely. The match could be the longest for high-flying European travelers, and when we count up at the end we suddenly have contributions from both sides. We are banking on another fast-paced Premier League match, and recommend goal bets, preferably with both teams as contributors!
