Liga Portugal stands out as a league with a relatively low goal average, but in return a high average of both corners and cards. There are often intense matches, a lot of duels and a high willingness to attack. Because the low goal average must not be confused with defensive football. The teams go on the attack, but often meet an opponent in balance, and therefore the attacks often end in corners rather than goals.

Braga and Benfica represent two of the big four in Portuguese football, geographically based in northern Portugal and the capital Lisbon respectively, and with a long history both nationally and in a European context. These are matches that mean more than three points – they are direct indicators of who is keeping up at the top. Porto has already set the standard, and both Braga and Benfica know that dropping points here can be costly in the title race.

Braga – currently behind schedule

Braga has had a weaker start to the season than expected, and the ambition must at least be to secure fourth place, ahead of Gil Vicente , and a Vitória de Guimarães who are coming from behind with great speed. The surprising loss to Estoril in the previous round of the league was a clear setback, and a reaction is expected here.

The hosts are missing the toxic striker Amine El Ouazzani , which could affect offensive efficiency, but at the same time contribute to a match with fewer central finishes and more crosses from the wing – often a recipe for increased corner production.

In addition, Sikou Niakaté out at the back, while Lagerbielke is also uncertain, which could force Braga to defend lower and clear corners more often. All in all, it is a match where Braga must both chase results and deal with constant pressure.

Fortunately, Ricardo Horta started his 11th season in a fantastic way. Six goals so far from the Braga legend, and he, more than anyone else, is painfully aware of what is at stake here.

Benfica – Mourinho's men refuse to lose

Benfica appear solid and stable, and although the name José Mourinho always makes headlines when mentioned in Portuguese football, it is the players on the pitch that are in focus here. For Norwegian eyes, it is interesting to follow Andreas Schjelderup , who admittedly does not play very much, but is still considered an exciting project. Fredrik Aursnes , on the other hand, is absolutely central – in fact, he is the player with the most minutes of all Benfica players this season, and he delivers at an extremely high level.

In addition, 19-year-old Gianluca Prestianni deserves attention. The Argentine, who you can read more about here , is creative, fearless and almost consistently challenges one-on-one, which often leads to blocks and corners. At the top, Benfica has the league's top scorer in Vangelis Pavlidis. The Greek, who previously played for AZ Alkmaar, has an impressive 14 goals in 15 league games and ensures that Benfica spends a lot of time in and around the opponent's box.

Even, tight and lacking in goals?

Benfica have yet to lose in the series, but with too many draws they have already fallen slightly behind Porto at the top. In the Portuguese League, a lot is about how the top four teams perform against each other, as they usually win the other games. This makes the match in Braga extra important.

The statistics also support our main bet. The last five meetings between these teams have yielded an average of 9.6 corners, and the fact that Braga produces an average of 5.73 corners per game this year, while Benfica stands at 5.47, makes us strong in our belief.

Now, these teams rarely go over 8.5 corners in their matches, but the explanation often lies in the opposition – as it is usually only the top team that creates pressure, while the opponent contributes minimally. When two top teams meet, the dynamic changes completely. Both attack, both press high, and both force situations along the edges. That is precisely why the following play appears to be a good play with good value;

Portugal at 19:00: Braga - Benfica: Over 8.5 corners (1.73)
