Yawn. You sit down in the armchair ready for a Premier League match in prime time. Your better half has brought the children to your mother-in-law's, and it's just you, a beer, and your boys on the screen. Finally. Now you're going to shout at the screen, bounce around on the floor at every net, and really enjoy the sight of your team in blue and burgundy. But what is this? Hip fixation, missed chances and a complete lack of self-confidence?! You're in a tizzy, change the channel, and start a rerun of Charter Fever instead. Because that's what it must feel like to be with Aston Villa so far this season. One goal in five games. That would be an average of 0.2 goals per game. And with all due respect to the teams that have faced Villa so far, they're not the best of the best either. What has actually happened in Birmingham over the summer? Anyone seen Ollie Watkins? Fulham is in better shape. Two wins, two draws, and only one loss to Chelsea. Eighth place is a good place to attack from, and so far Iwobi looks like a million bucks. Two teams with quite different levels of confidence meet on Sunday.

Aston Villa – From Champions League to relegation zone

Because here things fluctuate. Aston Villa have delivered a couple of really good seasons now, and last year's sixth place is also noticeable, even though the fourth place from the year before was not completely followed up. In any case, it has meant games in Europe for Villa, and both income and match load have increased. Increased load, less recovery, and more focus on performance also in midweek is a transition, and as of now it does not seem that the team has managed the change. The domestic league is suffering, and after five rounds the Birmingham team stands with zero wins, and only the one goal against Sunderland in the protocol.

The teams we have faced so far have been teams to compete with. At least if the goal is to advance in Europe. The problem, apart from the fact that we have not managed to do just that, is that so little is created. Few chances, awkward attacking play, and a goalscorer completely lacking in self-confidence. We saw it last Thursday night against Bologna. Watkins put the ball on the chalk mark, and delivered a weak penalty in the middle of the goal. Symbolic of the Englishman's lack of flow. However, the final result was positive for Villa. A win here could provide a small spark for the games to come. If we turn the tables, we only have Friday and Saturday before we have to go to press again. This is exactly what seems difficult for the home team to handle.

A combined goal difference of 1-5 so far in the league season must be improved immediately. So must the points collection. It will not be easy against a stingy Fulham, while also missing the energetic Tielemans in the engine room. It could be another frustrating game at Villa Park.

Fulham – You can never write off Fulham

Because this team never ceases to impress me. An eighth place after the first five, several good games, and a difficult team to break down. Ring fox Marco Silva has a good football team on his hands, and if you meet Fulham on the wrong day they are more than a handful for an opponent.

We have to say a few words about the team's best player, Alex Iwobi. The towering Nigerian is the driving force behind this team, and the man who can make a big difference on his own. He has those games from time to time, like most recently against Brentford, where he is almost unstoppable. For a team like Fulham, who are often found around mid-table, it is crucial to have these individual contributions that occasionally save the day on their own. Perhaps together with Harry Wilson, it is Iwobi who has the right tools in his box to be the trump card.

However, the goals have not come in a flash so far this season. A goal difference of 6-5 is evidence of a compact and strong team that, above all, does not allow for anything. The tight defensive structure with Andersen and Bassey in central defense, in front of a very competent, Leno, in the cage, always gives Fulham hope for points, as long as they manage to keep the opponent at arm's length. And that is exactly what Fulham often manages.

Away against Aston Villa we will probably see more of this. Fulham are playing with short distances between the teams, and try to counterattack when the time is right. With a hungry home team, opportunities may arise, so it remains to be seen whether the away team wants and dares to seize the opportunities.

Conclusion – This smells like a draw a long way off

Aston Villa have three draws in their first five, Fulham have two. Furthermore, the home team has only scored this one goal so far, and conceded five. Fulham have also conceded five, but in the yard you could have gotten up from your seats six times. Anyway, the average is low. We will take note of the numbers for now, and look at form and motivation.

The home team should have loads of motivation. The problem is that it hasn't loosened up yet. Will it loosen up at home against a compact Fulham? Three days after they ran their socks off against Bologna? It doesn't seem particularly likely. What seems more likely, however, is that Villa will get tired before the game is over. It also seems credible that the fear of losing is great here, and that they won't come out of the starting blocks roaring. A cautious approach, and a hidden hope of three points if one of the balls is in play during the match.

For Fulham, they are coming off three straight wins. Two in the league, and most recently in the EFL Cup. All of these games build confidence that the season will be profitable for the Londoners. What is certain, however, is that Villa Park is historically a tough ground to come to. The home crowd will demand effort from the home team, and it seems reasonable to believe that Fulham will be a bit of a wait-and-see.

This, together with the low average, makes us recommend an under bet this Sunday. Of course, Aston Villa not scoring goals in the Premier League won't last forever, but right now, so few hours after a tough European match, may not be the opportunity they are waiting for. Fulham, on the other hand, are stingy, and the whole thing could quickly culminate in a rather tame affair. If you dare, you can try for a draw on the coupon, perhaps primarily at half-time?
