"The Dream and the Abyss"

There are moments in football that define not just seasons but clubs. For Arsenal and PSG, this semi-final is just that. Two clubs that have spent years – and billions – building up to this point. They have smelled the final, tasted the trophy in their dreams, but never quite got it. Now they stand on the doorstep. One step away from immortality – and one fall away from total heartbreak.

This is not just a battle for a final spot – it is a duel between two different project philosophies:

    – Arsenal with patient club building and development.

    – PSG with heavy investments and finally a system around the superstars.

When Arsenal and PSG take to the pitch in this semi-final, it's not just a battle for a place in the final. It's a battle for relevance, for identity – and to shake off the ghost of almost seasons.

ARSENAL

Built stone by stone under Arteta. Development-oriented, analytical, based on structure and collective. They may not have spent the biggest money, but they have spent it smartly.
Arteta's Arsenal is at its best when they dictate everything. With Ødegaard as a metronome, Rice as a balance point, and Saka as a perpetual threat in the right corridor, they create both control and chaos for the opponent.

The London club come into the semi-finals in strong form. In the quarter-finals they impressed greatly by knocking out the immortal Real Madrid 5-1 on aggregate. They shocked the first leg with a 3-0 home win, and they followed that up with a solid 1-2 away win in Madrid the following week. In the Premier League they have also been rock solid on their own turf and have only lost once in the league and CL in front of their own fans, so at home at the Emirates the hosts are no easy opponents no matter who comes to visit, and they seem full of confidence after reaching their first Champions League semi-final since 2009.

They play a possession-based and aggressive style of football, where they like to press high and win the ball back as early as possible, then quickly break out to the wings where Saka and Martinelli can challenge. Offensively, they will probably attack wide with the two mentioned, who both have extreme one-on-one skills due to their extreme speed and close technique. Ødegaard operates as a creative playmaker between the opposition's pressing lines, and I also believe that Declan Rice will be moved down to his usual defensive midfield role this match due to Partey's suspension due to yellow cards, this will probably provide the balance they need defensively.

At the Emirates we can expect a home team that goes out at a high pace to gain an early advantage – as they did against Real when they blew them off the pitch, at the same time Arteta's team have shown the ability to be patient and control when needed, which will be important to avoid giving PSG space to counterattack. I also think that Merino could be moved down the middle here to help Ødegaard set the pace of the match, and personally I think that Arsenal's trio in the middle of the pitch is stronger than what the visitors can provide here, and this will be a key factor in the match.

With the home team's threat on the wings, the PSG full-backs (Hakimi and Mendes) have to prioritize the defensive every time they go offensive, and the same applies to the home team's full-backs, because the visitors possess no less of an offensive threat with their trio up front (Kvaratskhelia, Barcola and Dembele) all have extreme skills when it comes to pace both with and without the ball, and we saw a Liverpool team that really struggled to control the visitors' offensive power when they smoked out against PSG earlier in the tournament.
But what about Real Madrid's front trio? Everyone talked about how insanely good Real Madrid's offensive players are and there was no way to how many goals they were going to score against an Arsenal team without Gabriel in their back ranks in the quarter-finals. But the result was that Vini JR managed to find his way to the goal once after Saliba gave the ball away from 18 meters, and I would probably rank that front trio as high as what awaits tomorrow night personally.

PSG

The visitors secured their place in the quarter-finals in dramatic fashion. The French side beat Aston Villa 5-4 on aggregate, after winning 3-1 at home and losing 3-2 away. They were crowned French league champions in April, a testament to their strong national form. At the same time, they were given a wake-up call ahead of the first semi-final: a 1-3 home defeat to Nice in the league (the first home league defeat of the season). Overall, PSG have proven to be a winning team this season, but their performances have varied somewhat – particularly defensively – in some matches.

Under Luis Enrique's leadership, the visitors have cultivated a technical and intensive style of play. The team wants a lot of possession, short passes and to dictate the game with a high tempo. At the same time, they have shown a very aggressive high pressure to recover and this is what took them past Villa in the quarter-finals. We can probably expect the visitors to try the same here against Arsenal, if they manage to keep the ball in periods then they will be able to dampen the hosts' initiative in the match as well. In the transition game, the visitors are among the very best in Europe. With Dembèlè's speed and dribbling skills up front, combined with Kvaratskhelia's creativity and Barcola's lightning-fast runs into the box, they will be able to punish the hosts here if they are too high. Both full-backs Hakimi and Nuno Mendes like to storm forward on counterattacks and in the return match against Villa both scored on quick transitions.

The French have a star-studded squad and several match-winners. Even without Mbappè, the visitors have many offensive weapons and another proof of their breadth when it comes to the offensive is that in the meeting with Aston Villa they had four different goal scorers. They are used to a high pace from their domestic league and have individually strong players in all areas: Marquinhos leads the defense with authority, Donnarumma in goal is capable of game-winning saves (something he proved with a series of class saves against Villa in the final minutes) and the midfield has good technical quality.
Under coach Luis Enrique, they have also incorporated a clear style of play with intensive pressing, which can stress even the most ball-secure teams around Europe. PSG have been in this phase of the tournament several times in recent years, so there is some more experience from big Champions League matches in the team (they were in the final in 2020 and in the semi-finals in 2021).

Despite all their quality, the visitors have shown a tendency to collapse under pressure. In the quarter-finals, they almost completely slipped away when they conceded two quick goals against Villa and were only one goal away from extra time – it took a couple of heroic interventions from Donnarumma to avoid total collapse, and I don't think it will be any easier against a home team who have just shown the football world that they can knock out teams like Real Madrid over two games.

Summary

Both Arsenal and PSG enter the semi-finals with sky-high ambitions and belief in victory. Both teams are in good form, and both have the qualities that can send them to the final.
Arsenal impressed greatly against Real Madrid and have a young, dynamic squad where attacking stars such as Saka and Martinelli, supported by a robust midfield led by Rice and Ødegaard, can cause trouble for any opponent.

PSG, on the other hand, have a star-studded lineup even though Mbappè is away - Dembèlè, Hakimi, Kvaratskhelia and others have shown that they can win tough matches even when things are going badly.
The duel looks to be a meeting between two teams that can both dominate the ball and counterattack at high speed. The key duels along the wings and in midfield will have a major impact on the outcome of the match, and it will be exciting to see if the home team's collective can outsmart the visitors' individual class.

All in all, it is set for a very exciting and even semi-final over two legs. One thing is certain: either Arsenal or PSG will reach their first Champions League final in many years, and the battle for the long-awaited trophy is alive and well for both.
