Analysis of:
Arsenal - PSV Eindhoven 12-03-2025

Analysis Information
There is talk of a place in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, but when the visitors managed to lose 7-1 at home in the first leg, there is no need to sit with a high pulse and sweaty hands this Wednesday evening. But since Arsenal have already advanced, we also believe that there will be rotation in several places this match, and therefore we believe the visitors can find their way to the goal.
Arsenal
Arsenal have had an impressive season in the Champions League 2024/2025 season and have established themselves as a strong contender in Europe's most prestigious club competition.
Under the new format, Arsenal played against 8 different opponents and came away with a 6-1-1 record, the biggest triumphs being the 2-0 home win against PSG and the 1-5 away win against Sporting, and with a total of 19 out of 24 points after the group stage, they were thus assured of a place in the last 16 against PSV.
That match ended, as I said, with a crushing 1-7 victory and all the excitement before the return match in London on Wednesday night disappeared. The positive thing about that match was that most Arsenal fans had probably hoped for a narrow victory against a PSV team that had beaten both Juventus (3-1) and Liverpool (3-2) at home, so to see that the goals just kept coming was as shocking as what it must have been for the home fans that night. Another thing that the critics had to realize was that Arsenal, even without a striker, managed to score with seven different goal scorers in this match, and that is quite rare at the top level in Europe.
There have also been rumours that Arsenal's arguably best defender William Saliba has been linked with a move to Real Madrid this summer, but he has expressed his satisfaction with his time at Arsenal and his ambition to win significant trophies with the club. Recognising the need to improve his game and contribution to the team, he has dismissed rumours of a move to Madrid, stressing his desire to remain at Arsenal.
Mikel Arteta
The manager has stressed that there is no extra pressure on the team to perform in the Champions League, despite the challenges in the Premier League. He sees the tournament as an opportunity for the team to show their best and give younger players the chance to shine on the biggest stage for club teams.
With a solid lead, Arteta is already looking towards a quarter-final against either Real Madrid or Atlètico Madrid, and this will undoubtedly be a much tougher test than what awaits them on Wednesday night.
As for the injury situation at Arsenal, it was probably pleasing to see Gabriel Martinelli back on the pitch again in the 1-1 draw against Man.Utd at the weekend, and maybe it's possible that Arteta will get him match fit by giving him some minutes here too? Another one who is starting to return to match form is Ben White, and considering that Jurrien Timber may have to serve a quarter-final with a card here, there is probably a good chance that Timber will get through this one. Otherwise, I think we will see Zinchenko, Jorghino, Jacub Kiwior and Kieran Tierney back and maybe Neto will also be at the back this match.
PSV Eindhoven
PSV have had a slightly more tortuous path into the round of 16, because after the group stage was over they were outside a direct place in the playoffs after only 4-2-2 in the final, but the highlight of the group stage was probably the 3-2 victory at home against a greatly reduced Liverpool team, but then they believed that something big was going to happen. They had to go to the qualifiers against Juventus to secure advancement, and after a 2-1 loss in Turin, there were probably not many in the PSV camp who believed that this could happen. But with an energetic home crowd behind them, they beat the guests from Italy 3-1 on their own turf. But they probably would not have believed in their wildest nightmares that everything would be decided after the first match against Arsenal, so I would like to know how they entered this second leg.
Despite the team's mixed results, individual players have excelled. Luuk de Jong has been a key contributor up front alongside Noah Lang, and at the back Ryan Flamingo has done his job well. And although PSV face an almost impossible task, the team will play for glory and try to end their Champions League season on a positive note.
PSV coach Bosz will still have to manage without Malik Tillman, Ricardo Pepi and Esmir Bajraktarevic, but he will demand that his team not sit down and whine, but give it a real try.
Conclusion
As mentioned earlier, this is a game where Arsenal will rotate many of their players, and having watched thousands of football matches, you know that it can quickly mean that the usual relationships are not quite right, and I wouldn't be surprised if PSV can actually take something from this. But I trust that those sent out there are more than capable of withstanding whatever the visitors have to offer, and even though they are 9-0 up at home so far in the Champions League, I actually think the visitors can find a way to the goal here.
