Arsenal – Bournemouth 05/03/25

Analysis Information
- The final stages of the season, and it all needs to be rounded off in the most advantageous way possible. But, it is also at this stage where you don't necessarily have everything to play for. Arsenal will most likely be second in this year's edition of the Premier League, and the team that never wins anything will lick its wounds for another year. Perhaps the Champions League can bring the big thing, but after PSG left London, not many dare to hope for too much. Arsenal were a number too small. The question ahead of this match is how this will affect the motivation of Arteta's men. Players will probably be spared for the trip to Paris, and the lineup will most likely bear the impression that there is something more at stake under the floodlights next week.
Bournemouth, on the other hand, has had a good season, but it probably doesn't result in anything beyond that, nice experiences and solid performances. The team is full of players who are up for sale in the summer, and that's probably a lot of what it will be about, good sales, and even better additions. It is clear that players like Semenyo, Kerkez and Huijsen can bring a ringing coin to the coffers. Bournemouth is only a point behind eighth place, but anything more than that is probably not realistic to hope for. In any case, a successful season measured against the conditions of the team from the seaside resort in the south.
Arsenal – Are they going to stumble on the finish line again?
Before the season, it was supposed to be between Arsenal and Manchester City. At least if you listened to British pundits. It turns out that retired footballers are not necessarily experts, and the need to stay relevant in front of the TV screen trumps insight and the ability to analyze the state of affairs. Who would have thought. Manchester City has underperformed, while Arsenal has more or less delivered as expected. If you have to point a finger at any of the Londoners' problems, it has to be the breadth of the squad. With important players like Havertz and Saka out, things are suddenly becoming terribly thin. Sterling is not a man you can include in a squad with the stated ambitions that Arteta has. This needs to be fixed if you are really going to challenge for the title. The strikers are not easy to buy, and for some reason this is neglected season after season. I dare say it is now or never for Arsenal. Several of the players are at their peak now, and an attack with a goal-hungry Saka, together with a proper goalscorer, and perhaps a slightly sharper left winger than Martinelli could really be something. Some critical questions will soon have to be asked of Arteta and his men, because it is approaching five years without any additions to the medal collection now, and it would be a shame to waste the opportunities with the quality players that are at your disposal.
The Champions League will of course trump the Premier League in the coming week. Arsenal have a loss to avenge, and must focus both personnel and mental strength towards Paris. The task will be tough, but there may be opportunities. Arteta must encourage full focus and effort, and it is questionable whether that could not mean a somewhat reduced crew against Bournemouth. It would be strange to risk injuries and wear and tear so close to the most important match of the season.
Martin Ødegaard has something to prove. The captain has had a weak season by his standards. In the important matches, the Norwegian falls through, and a united press named the light-haired player the worst on the pitch against PSG. This is not the first time he has been beaten this season, and it is urgent for Arteta to find out what is the cause of the dip in form. The sharp passes have failed, and goals are no longer being scored. The captain also seems weak with the ball at times, and loses the ball surprisingly often. It may have been best to rest Martin this weekend, and sharpen both the physical and mental aspects towards the return match in France next week.
Arsenal are five points behind third in the Premier League and seem to be managing second place well. The last time they played on their own turf in the league was a 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace, and the reverse fixture against Bournemouth ended in a 0-2 loss in the autumn.
Bournemouth – A positive season that could result in a player exodus
The downside of delivering a good season for the teams in the middle of the table is the fact that the best players end up on the radar of the best clubs. There are of course two sides to this coin too, as it is often good player sales that can take these clubs to the next level. But you have to start a little over again, with new faces and new relationships. We mentioned three sale objects at the beginning, and it would not be surprising if all three walk out the gates during the summer. Both Liverpool and Arsenal have several of these names on the block.
But, this could also lead to good performances at the end of the season. The club is playing for an advanced position, and the profiles in the team are playing for their future, which may mean golden contracts and nights on the biggest stages. Bournemouth overall will probably bite them off in the remaining four matches.
Evanilson is serving a suspension after a clumsy red card last weekend, but otherwise Iraola should be able to choose relatively freely. Even though Evanilson was given marching orders against United, they managed to claw a point. But, it could have easily been three. Far into overtime, Højlund got a puncture in the boil, and two points were lost. Ouattara will probably be moved up to the forward position against Arsenal, while Kluivert, Semenyo and Scott will get the nod to the advanced midfield positions.
Bournemouth have scored 53 goals so far this season, and it's showing. Interestingly, they are the league's fifth best away team this season. That could easily result in both goals and points this weekend against a somewhat divided Arsenal team.
Conclusion – Is Arsenal at 90% superior enough?
I don't think Arsenal will be 100% on Saturday. One thing is the players chosen by Arteta, another thing is the effort they choose to put in. Yes, it is important to keep second place in the league, but you have both the chance and the time to cement that later. Now it's PSG that matters, everything else is idiocy. If you were to choose to give Arsenal a 30% chance of advancing to the final, then that's 30% you have to take with both hands. Matches swing in all directions, red cards occur, and cheap penalties turn a match upside down. Arsenal just needs to slip a little in Paris, and it's a match again. Both the players and the manager know this, and it is completely impossible to put these thoughts, this focus, away, and just be present against Bournemouth in a relatively unimportant football match. Arsenal can of course win them, and they can score more goals, but what really happens when you let yourself down a little, and become a little unfocused? Yes, the opponent punishes you.
And you will find resistance in Bournemouth. They have spot-kickers in Kluivert, power and speed in Semenyo, and enterprising full-backs with crosses and goal points in them. The total could provide an entertaining match, where the conditions are quite different. If Arsenal are slightly reduced, these are two evenly matched football teams. If Arsenal are mentally in France, Bournemouth is better. It is easy to make sloppy mistakes when you are not fully sharpened, and we have seen solid pieces in this Arsenal team suffer some real blisters in recent weeks. This will be open, and it will swing. A match where chance can quickly decide.
We are betting on goals for both players, and we also believe that we can get at least three goals, yes, maybe even more than that. Maybe a relevant match to play live, as the daily form here will have a lot to say. The starting tip feels solid anyway.
