Top match with a promotion smell – match of the year in the 3rd League

When two of the 3rd Liga's in-form teams meet in what can be considered one of the most important matches for both teams this year, the framework is set for a brilliant football match. It is about an important 1st place, and at the very least, consolidating the distance down to a qualifying place. At the time of writing, we have a limping Energie Cottbus there, 6 points behind Arminia Bielefeld who is in 2nd place. One poor point ahead of there we find Dynamo Dresden who also have +3 goals to go on in addition. Both teams have a fantastic fan base and the Schüco Arena is expected to be sold out. To put it in perspective: imagine a sold out Ullevaal Stadion, then you have the framework for this match. With only three rounds left to play, both teams can secure promotion already this weekend - assuming results elsewhere go their way. And with an unprecedented pressure of expectations from both sides, this match must be navigated with moderation from an odds perspective.

Arminia Bielefeld: In the battle against the 2. Bundesliga

After faltering early in the season, Arminia has really found its rhythm under Mitch Kniat. The team is undefeated in its last ten games in all competitions (9-1-0), and has won its last five in the league. They have not lost since a 2-1 defeat to Verl on March 8th – a loss that in retrospect seems to have lit a spark. They have a PPG of 2.0 and a +15 at home this season.

Offensively, the team has been explosive, but also disciplined. In the 3-0 win against Ingolstadt last weekend, they kept a clean sheet for the third game in a row, created several big chances and dominated an Ingolstadt side that has been difficult to beat this season. This can be reflected in the fact that they held Dynamo Dresden to a 2-2 draw away from home. This is evidence of an Arminia team that has a strong belief in its own game and its own qualities on the day. The whole team has contributed in every way, but it is also reflected in brilliant play in the defensive structure and the transition game from Oppie, Russo and captain Corboz.

With their home crowd behind them and a promotion ticket as a lure, there is little doubt that Arminia will attack this match with a big heart. They have won 8 of their last 10 league matches, scoring first in the majority of them. In addition, they have reached the final of the DFB-Pokal, which has given them further confidence. It is hard to imagine the team saying they will be satisfied with a draw, or aiming for a draw, here they know that they have enough qualities to beat Dynamo and a 1st place will taste far better than a 2nd place.

Key statistics Arminia:

  • 9 wins in last 10 matches in all competitions

  • 3 straight clean sheets in the league. Has also kept the most clean sheets, 13 games

  • Scores on average after 23.7 minutes at home, evidence of explosive starts

  • Has not drawn in 9 of its last 10 matches

Dynamo Dresden: Steady and stable at the top

Dynamo Dresden has been one of the most solid teams throughout the season, and with 9 games without a loss (6-3-0) they are at the top. They have proven to be a strong away team, with 6 away wins in the last 10, and like Arminia, have conceded few goals – only 10 goals in the same period. Unlike Arminia, who have had an increasing form (especially after the winter break), Dynamo have been a force to be reckoned with since day 1. They have stumbled a bit along the way, but their performances have been consistent all season. Like Arminia, they have better home statistics, but their away statistics with PPG 1.76 and +12 in goal difference are not to be feared. There have also been 5 losses away, compared to 2 at home, but we have to go back to February when the last loss came away.

Coach Markus Anfang still has to deal with a team that hasn't been as explosive offensively lately. Although there have been goals in 80% of their last games, several wins have come after tight and controlled performances. They score on average after 29 minutes away from home, and often play their best after the break - 3 of their last 10 wins came after a decisive second half.

In recent history, Dresden has also had the upper hand over Arminia, 3 wins in the last 3 matches with a 7-1 goal difference – but in a top match with high shoulders, a lot at stake and two teams with similar form curves, there is no guarantee of a repeat. Arminia can currently be considered a better team than they were last year.

Key statistics Dresden:

  • 9 out of last 10 games without a loss

  • Has scored in 80% of his last matches

  • Away average of 1.8 goals per game

  • Only 1 loss in the last 10 in the 3rd League

Conclusion and betting suggestions

This match is as much about mentality as it is about quality. Arminia are on fire, and with six straight wins in sight and home advantage, they are the clear favorites. At the same time, Dynamo have proven difficult to beat – especially away from home. The statistics point towards a close and goalless match between two solid defensive units. As usual, it is a bit extra challenging to find bets on lower divisions, so we have a little less to choose from. The following bets are considered:

  • Both teams to score: No (2.45): This one is exciting, both teams have kept a clean sheet in half of their last 10. But, now two top teams meet without any notable problems with either injuries or suspensions. Both teams definitely have goals in them, with a slight edge on Arminia. They have also kept a clean sheet in their last 3 games, so this one could definitely go down.
  • Under 2.5 goals (2.15): Here we have looked at statistics and come up with a 64% probability, with two teams that rarely concede much.
  • Arminia Bielefeld to win (2.12): Based solely on recent form, there is a slight advantage for Arminia here. They have a bit more fluidity in their game and have home field advantage. They have already beaten several big teams here this season and are not easy to deal with. They have a towering self-confidence in the team, and Dynamo will struggle to break it down.
  • Arminia Bielefeld over 1.5 goals (1.85): With a goal average of 2 per game at the Schüco Arena and over 2 goals in the last 7 of 10 games, this one could sit well. On a bad day, Dynamo can be lax at the back, as seen recently against Ingolstadt and the 2nd team of Hannover where they conceded 2 in both games.
  • Over 1 goal Asian in the 1st half (1.60): Both teams are explosive in their matches and if we look at the last 10 matches overall for both, 7 of these have gone over 2 goals in the 1st half. The same happened in the match in December, when Dynamo won 3-0.

It is never easy to land a bet in such important matches. A lot is at stake, but such pressure has been experienced by one team in particular 3 times this season and mastered: Arminia. The choice here falls on marking, with good odds in mind. If you want to secure this a little more, you can consider a draw not bet at 1.55. The feeling is closest to Arminia here, with joy over a good season, form curve, a step towards promotion and not least Berlin to look forward to, everything is in place for the home team to play this match with somewhat lower shoulders than Dynamo. Therefore, the main bet here is:

3. League at 16:30: Arminia Bielefeld - Dynamo Dresden: Arminia Bielefeld wins (2.12)
