Analysis Information
Offensive forces against experienced youngsters
With my hand on my heart: We can put international football behind us again and return to the country I definitely like best – Australia. An incredibly exciting match awaits, where Adelaide United will be visited by the in-form Melbourne City.
Offensively good, but defensively shaky
Adelaide are known for their attacking prowess, and that is exactly what I think will punish them in this match. The season has started rough for “The Reds”, with two wins and two losses – a start that has shown both strengths and weaknesses. It is no surprise that they have been pouring in goals, but it is disappointing that they have not quite made it sound offensively, even with Craig Goodwin back in the squad. It has simply not held up against the better teams in the table.
But don't get me wrong: there's always a smell of goals when Adelaide plays, regardless of the opponent. That it will be difficult to come away with three points today, however, seems pretty clear. Because what happens when an offensive team with defensive problems meets a team with a 7–1 goal difference? I think that means a red carpet loss.
Seasoned youngsters with one goal – to win
Melbourne City have been far more exciting to watch this season than last year, when almost the entire attacking line was out. With routines in place and a solid defense in place, City have started the season strongly: 2–2–0 and 7–1 on goal difference in their last four games. And we can't skip the impressive triumph against Machida Zelvia in the AFC Champions League.
With Caputo up front and Beach in goal, City have put together a potent combination, and they are playing football that clearly signals one thing: they are going for the A-League title this year. They control games with defensive structure, lots of ball and patience – and when you have attacking players like Rahmani and Caputo lurking behind the stoppers, it quickly becomes dangerous.
Against an attacking Adelaide team, City will have space – especially if they score first. Then the hosts will press even more, and the back space will open up for Caputo. I imagine a match where Melbourne City rolls the ball, moves the team side to side and waits for openings, while Adelaide threatens to counter. If City scores early, they can continue to stand tall, but if they pull the goal out in time, they will probably fall back a little and punish Adelaide on the counter for 2–0.
And this is where we land on the goal game.
Games and rating
With this match picture in mind, I think we will have a variable match depending on who scores first – but I am leaning towards Melbourne opening the ball. Over 1.5 goals for the away team I therefore see as very attractive, especially against an Adelaide team that has a clear tendency to concede goals against stronger opponents.
Our main bet today is therefore Melbourne City over 1.5 goals. I also think the visitors will take all three points. And should Adelaide get one goal, it always feels safer to have gone for goal betting rather than pure marking in the A-League.
